For fans of my wife, artist April Sunami:
New Exhibition Brings Together Two Diverse Artists with Universal Theme
Street artist Stephanie Rond and mixed media painter April Sunami will feature new work in the exhibition Common Cosmology. The exhibit brings together themes of culture, spirituality, and humanity through painting, installation and collaborative pieces. The show will be on exhibition at the Vanderelli Room May 7th-May 29th 2016 with an opening reception on May 13th 7-11pm.
Common Cosmology was born out of conversations between Sunami and Rond about the new directions they were taking in their art work. “I‘m interested in how cultures and belief systems are often intertwined and ultimately they share more commonalities than differences” says April Sunami of her new paintings utilizing a female form coupled with abstracted backgrounds. Rond states that “my pieces in Common Cosmology are not intended to hold answers about humanity, but rather cultivate questions to consider and discuss. My goal is to create work that serves as a springboard for meaningful conversation. It is my belief that kindness will prevail”.
Stephanie Rond is a Columbus, Ohio based street artist whose colorful and feminist work can be seen on walls around the city, both inside and out. Stephanie attended Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Ohio State University. She is co-founder of Creative Arts of Women (CAW), founder of the website Women Street Artists and owns S.Dot Gallery. An award-winning documentary has been created about her work. The film, Tiny Out Loud, studies Rond’s gender-gouging street art and her dollhouse art galleries in a fun but evocative exploration making gender roles smaller and the art world’s accessibility larger.
April Sunami is a professional visual artist mainly focusing on mixed media painting. She received her Master of Arts Degree in Art History from Ohio University and her Bachelor of Arts Degree also in Art History from the Ohio State University. Her subjects mainly revolve around portraits of women and the female form. Sunami is also an award-winning installation artist through the 2012 Columbus Arts Pop Up Project sponsored by the Greater Columbus Arts Council. She was born and raised in Ohio and currently resides in Columbus, Ohio. April’s work has been widely exhibited throughout Columbus and represented in private collections throughout the country.
